Join us for an action-packed conversation with New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Ones Series in a discussion about her second installment in the series, The Merciless Ones.
In Forna’s first New York Times Bestselling book, The Gilded Ones, readers are introduced to sixteen-year-old Deka, who lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.
Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.
Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. Uncovering mysteries surrounding herself and the kingdom all along the way.
The second thrilling installment, The Merciless Ones, picks up six months since Deka freed the goddesses in the ancient kingdom of Otera and discovered who she really is… but war is waging across the kingdom, and the real battle has only just begun. For there is a dark force growing in Otera—a merciless power that Deka and her army must stop.
Yet hidden secrets threaten to destroy everything Deka has known. And with her own gifts changing, Deka must discover if she holds the key to saving Otera… or if she might be its greatest threat.

13th Annual Eagle Watch 2023

We're hosting a free Community Art Showcase. Anyone can participate in a variety of types of media, including illustration, painting, photography, and many more. It's not a contest, but a couple of Director's Favorites will be chosen.

If you haven’t gotten your booster yet, but are interested, there’s a free, walk-in, 3-day vaccine clinic next week. It runs from Thursday, Jan. 19 through Saturday, Jan. 21. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, and it will be held at 523 E. 3rd St., which is the former Griffith Motors building, across from Sawyer’s and Grinders Coffee.
No appointment, ID or insurance needed!
The clinic offers primary and booster doses of COVID vaccines, regular flu vaccines and the MPOX vaccine.
Everyone 6 months and older is eligible for the primary or booster doses of COVID, and also for the flu vaccine.
As for the effectiveness of the updated booster, which protects against the original strain of COVID and the omicron variant, a recent large preprint study in the medical journal Lancet found the updated booster reduces the risk of COVID hospitalization by 81 percent and deaths by 86 percent.
In raw numbers, the study looked at over 600,000 people 65 and older who belonged to a health service. Of that group, just 6 people who had the updated booster were hospitalized, compared to 297 people who hadn’t had the updated booster. One person with the bivalent booster died, compared to 73 who did not have the booster.

COLUMBIA GORGE ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION PRESENTS AN AFTERNOON OF CHAMBER MUSIC!
CGOA Presents an Afternoon of Chamber Music on January 22, 2023
Calling all concertgoers! Be sure to mark Sunday, January 22 for a delightful afternoon of chamber music.
What exactly is chamber music? CGOA’s Mark Steighner says that if “an orchestra or choir is a music factory, then chamber music is like an artist’s workshop. Big ensembles are great, but they can be anonymous, too. With chamber music, you get a much more personal musical experience.”
The annual chamber music afternoon was a popular staple of the CGOA season before the pandemic, but, like many things, had to be put on the shelf for a couple of years. But now, The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is back with a full season and a wide range of musical experiences, including chamber music.
One of the things that makes chamber music unique is that it is prepared by the musicians, working together outside of regular orchestra rehearsals. “For most musicians,” Steighner says, “it’s fun to use their skills and be responsible for making their own musical choices.”
While the final lineup of performers is still being set, the program includes string quartets, solo cello with piano, duets and a special appearance by the Riverside Community Church Chancel Choir performing Eric Whitacre’s “Sing Gently,” accompanied by a string quartet. Whitacre’s music was originally written for a virtual choir consisting of tens of thousands of singers from across the globe.
The Afternoon of Chamber Music concert begins at 1:30 PM at the Hood River Valley Christian Church, 975 Indian Creek Rd in Hood River. While there is no charge or tickets required, donations to CGOA will be welcomed at the door.
For information about all CGOA events, visit gorgeorchestra.org, or check out gorgeorchestra on Facebook and Instagram.

OPEN MIC NIGHT
JOIN LOCAL, TALENTED MUSICIANS, POETS, COMEDIANS, ETC FOR ROUTE 30'S OPEN MIC NIGHT EVERY MONDAY!
Please join for what is sure to be the most fun-filled hour of the day as we chat online with Randall Munroe about his new book What If? 2: Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions.
The millions of people around the world who read and loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, built a billion-story building, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on a geyser as it erupted? Okay, if you insist.
Before you go on a cosmic road trip, feed the residents of New York City to a T. rex, or fill every church with bananas, be sure to consult this practical guide for impractical ideas. Unfazed by absurdity, Randall consults the latest research on everything from swing-set physics to airplane-catapult design to clearly and concisely answer his readers’ questions. As he consistently demonstrates, you can learn a lot from examining how the world might work in very specific extreme circumstances.
Filled with bonkers science, boundless curiosity, and Randall’s signature stick-figure comics, What if? 2 provides his best answers yet to the weirdest questions you never thought to ask.
About the Author: Randall Munroe is the creator of the webcomic xkcd and author of What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions, Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words, How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real World Problems, and What if? 2: Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. Randall was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, and grew up outside Richmond, Virginia. After studying physics at Christopher Newport University, he got a job building robots at NASA Langley Research Center. In 2006 he left NASA to draw comics on the internet full time and has since been nominated for a Hugo Award three times. In 2013, the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid after him: asteroid 4942 Munroe is big enough to cause mass extinction if it ever hits a planet like Earth.
