This holiday season, the Harmony of the Gorge Chorus is sponsoring our “2023 CHRISTMAS CAROLERS.” Groups of singers will have opportunities to deliver a musical gift to individuals and groups throughout the mid-Columbia area during the holidays. Everyone who loves to sing, and would enjoy singing with us this holiday, are invited to come to our first Christmas Carolers rehearsal October 3rd (Tuesday) from 6:00-7:00 pm held in Down Manor. Many of the songs that we’ll be fine-tuning are familiar carols we’ve heard over the years. Our performances will include audience sing-a-longs, rounds, simple and four-part harmonies, and possibly a few quartets. Yes, we are inviting all singers to have some musical fun with us – men, women, friends, families, and more! If you love to sing, come have fun with us learning the songs during our one-hour rehearsals and then singing out in front of people closer to the holidays.
Harmony of the Gorge Chorus is sponsoring the CHRISTMAS CAROLERS as a way to celebrate, with all of our communities, our 40th anniversary this December as a Sweet Adeline chorus. Two of our original charter members are still singing with us, Nola Hardman and Dotty Nelson. Judy Galloway is our director. Harmony of the Gorge Chorus has been very active this year with performances, short rehearsals, coaching sessions, hosting a local workshop for other nearby Sweet Adeline choruses, singing “Happy Birthday” (in person and over the phone), baking and selling cookies during Families in the Park, and wrapping up the summer singing during the Huckleberry Festival. Our singers come together regularly from Stevenson, Parkdale, Odell, The Dalles, Lyle, White Salmon, and Hood River.
As we all know, singing is one of the best sports that we can do throughout our lives and it’s so fun and good for us. Music and singing are activities that stimulate and use the entire brain. Singing is a great way to make new friends, have fun, learn something new, and become involved positively within our communities.
This year everyone who loves to sing is invited to come and become part of our 2023 CHRISTMAS CAROLERS this year. Again, rehearsals start Tuesday, October 3rd in Down Manor from 6:00 to 7:00pm. Rehearsals will be fun and face-paced … giving everyone time to sing together, and also times to sing in smaller groups. Music and learning tracks will be provided. The Christmas Carolers website is: ComeSingNow.com. COME SING NOW – October 3rd at Down Manor (6-7). See you there!

ANOTHER NEW MURAL FOR THE DALLES! "WHERE WHEAT IS KING"
The local Northwest MuralFest Committee announces the design for the new mural to be painting October 5th-7th at The Dalles City Hall parking lot next to the Cherry mural. Lead artists are Portland Walldog sign painter Justin Reide and local artist Denae Manion. Manion was lead artist for the 2022 August children's mural on Wonderworks Museum. Local and regional volunteer painters will help to complete the mural in the limited time frame, just as the almost 300 volunteers from around the nation and around the world did during last year's big MuralFest. The public is invited to watch the "walldogs" paint and tour the older murals located throughout downtown The Dalles. There will be a dedication/celebration of the new mural Saturday, October 7 at 5 p.m.

On Thursday, October 12, 6:30pm, at The Dalles Art Center, author and artist Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield will give a PowerPoint presentation on the log cabin she built at age 18 in Oregon’s Strawberry Mountain Wilderness.
Almost five decades later, the cabin and Yvonne have weathered the years, and both continue to stand seasoned and proud. During this time, she wrote three books about her experiences there. Babe in the Woods: Path of Totality, just released, is the third in a series about life at the cabin. Her presentation will include discussion of the new book and a visual tour of the cabin and its early construction.
No longer her primary residence, Yvonne continues to go to this off-the grid cabin, reading and writing by the light of the original kerosene lamps, heating with a wood burning stove and splitting wood with the same ax she used as a teenager.
When she is not at the cabin Yvonne lives in a newly built home, studio and gallery on the banks of The Columbia River in The Dalles. Signed copies of the award winning, Babe in the Woods series will be available.
Yvonne is also part of an event on Sunday, October 22nd at Zion Luther Church ELCA that will benefit The Dalles Art Center. Art and Music Together with Yvonne and Gary Estep. Gary plays piano while Yvonne paints! Visit Yvonne's website for more information.

Second Saturday
Please join us! Ride in antique cars, watch the antique planes take off and land, enjoy living history at its finest!
Join us the Second Saturday of each month when WAAAM gets the engines running. Action occurs between 10am and 2pm. Lunch is served between 11am and 1pm.
Second Saturdays throughout the winter will be held indoors. Weather permitting, cars and airplanes will be taken outside. Otherwise, there will be indoor events including demonstrations, special exhibits and hands on experiences for visitors.
Our antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, military jeeps and engines all get their day in the sun when museum volunteers get to show visitors that this is not just a bunch of old, dead stuff ... that life goes on for our artifacts!
What Our Volunteers Have to Say:
"A visit to WAAAM on a Second Saturday is bound to make you realize just how easy life is today. Take for instance, the process of starting a car. People don't even give it a thought these days, but in 1917, it may have taken a half an hour just to get the oil warm enough to crank a Model T's engine to life!
"Life was certainly slower in those days, and knowing about how life was back then helps us appreciate so much more what we have today.
"Please join us on a Second Saturday of the month ... or on any day ... and take a step back in time with us."
—Judy Newman, WAAAM Volunteer

Frank Sinatra, often referred to as "Ol' Blue Eyes," was a legendary American singer, actor, and entertainer who left an indelible mark on the world of music and entertainment. Born on December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, New Jersey, Sinatra's smooth voice and charismatic stage presence made him an icon of the 20th century. He crooned his way into the hearts of millions with timeless classics like "My Way," "Fly Me to the Moon," and "New York, New York."
Sinatra's rise to fame was nothing short of meteoric. From his early days as a teen idol with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra to his reign as the "Chairman of the Board" in the 1950s and 60s, he enchanted audiences with his rich baritone voice and impeccable phrasing. He also ventured into acting, earning an Academy Award for his role in "From Here to Eternity." Sinatra's enduring legacy extends beyond his music and films; he remains an enduring symbol of American pop culture, a man who did it his way and left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment. Frank Sinatra's legacy continues to shine bright, captivating new generations with his timeless music and unparalleled charm.
Tribute artist Jamie Goetz will be accompanied by the CGOA Jazz Collective Big Band, an 18 piece ensemble that will be playing the actual arrangements used by Frank Sinatra when he performed with big bands.
