About Us

KODL began serving The Dalles on Oct. 19th, 1940, when we became Oregonís 19th radio station. KODL was immensely popular right from the start, but was ordered off the air in 1941 following the attack on Pearl Harbor. All West Coast radio stations were silent for a short while, as it was feared that the Japanese attack planes would use the signals to hone in on targets.

KODL was allowed to resume broadcasting on a limited basis from sunrise to sunset, but could not sign on in the mornings until patrols of American fighters swept for enemy fleets off the west coast. After the battle of Midway, stations were allowed to resume normal operations.
