The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea featuring works by Thomas Jefferson Kitts and Erik Sandgren

The Columbia River is a significant feature in the regional landscape. It is a companion for those who travel east and west between Astoria, Portland, and the mouth of the Snake River, and it is a destination for countless fishermen, water sports aficionados, and outdoor enthusiasts. The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea is being organized to celebrate the active and diverse ways in which humans have interacted with the river, its beauty, and its bounty. The interpretive goal of the display is to provide the public with an opportunity to reflect on the many facets of the river’s identity and to visually chronicle some of the human behaviors that shape its daily life—past and present. Within these parameters, we encourage visitors to think critically about the diverse—and sometimes competing—economic enterprises at the forefront of the exhibition.

Approximately 70 historic and contemporary paintings and photographs showing Middle and Lower Columbia River landscapes, peoples, ideas, and structures are on display, among them 20 works commissioned by prominent Portland-area artists Thomas Jefferson Kitts and Erik Sandgren. The exhibition also contains select examples of regional material culture by Indigenous artists. The works are drawn from the museum’s permanent collection and borrowed from public collections, private collectors, and local artists.

Since 1979, The Last Days of Jesus, Inc. has annually reenacted the Bible’s precious story of salvation. For generations, believers in Christ from our small community, nestled within the breathtaking backdrop of Oregon's scenic Columbia River Gorge, have volunteered to portray the most epic story of love and sacrifice known to mankind. Our mission is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through the medium of theatrical entertainment, fellowship and community. Our events are always free of charge, and we are very grateful to all who support our efforts to share the Gospel message through live reenactment. Fresh Perspective in Art
The 2024 Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour April 26 - 28, 2024, daily hours 10am - 5pm

The art world is known for being filled with outliers — those creative thinkers who approach their art and craft in a unique, original way. The Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour is filled with such artists — whose work is exemplary, who live and work in diverse settings, whose medium or approach is uncommon and rare. What is so unique about the Columbia River Gorge is that the environment itself is an outlier: the winding drive between studio stops can take you from forests to fields, rivers to mountains, and moss to basalt cliffs. So unique, as to be difficult to fully describe. It’s no wonder there are so many inspiring artists in the area — the area itself is inspirational.

This annual tour, now in its 18th year, features 45 local artist studios showcasing a diverse variety of work — from painting to ceramics, jewelry to textiles, woodworking to photography, metalwork to glass, basketry, quilting, sculpture, and more.

Having people see my artwork is an important part of the art process for me. Each year there is a different group of people who I get a chance to talk to and suggest other artists for them to see!” Rodney Stuart, mixed media artist

Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour invites art lovers to meet artists in their studio spaces — to experience art as work, craft, process, and inspiration. It is a free, self-guided tour of individual artist studios and workspaces located throughout the Mid-Columbia Gorge regional area. Featured studios are dotted on the map in all four mid-Columbia counties: Skamania, Klickitat, Hood River, and Wasco. Take advantage of the three days, April 26 to 28, to visit as many studios as you can. Or, if you have limited time, drop in to a select few new or favorite studios linked together by a stunning drive through this diverse environment.

Most days for the last five years, I wind my way west along the river to my studio in Carson, WA. Highway 14 is two lanes of asphalt that flows around basalt cliffs much as the river does. The rhythm sets my mood. I arrive ready to create.
Steve Kowats, metalwork artist

Visiting from out of town? Come for the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour and stay for the weekend! April is blossom time, so even the ride between studios is a dream. Spring is the time of year when everything emerges once more, including people. Experience the natural beauty of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area while enjoying fantastic local food, wineries, outdoor recreation, shopping, and a great selection of boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts.

We invite you to come experience the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour. To see what’s in store for this year’s experience, make sure to follow us on social media @gorgeartists or visit our website at www.gorgeartists.org.

ABOUT THE VENUE

About the Fairgrounds
The Wasco County Fairgrounds and W.E. Hunt Park are located in Tygh Valley, Oregon. The fairgrounds are home to the annual Wasco County Fair, which has been held here since 1937 when it was merged with the Southern Wasco County Fair. When not in use for the fair, the park and fairgrounds host a variety of events from the Bluegrass Jamboree in the fall to church camps in the spring.
W.E. Hunt Park
Hunt Park was originally owned by W.E. "Billy" Hunt and family. After his death in 1937, Mrs. Hunt and her children donated the 40 acres to Wasco County to serve as a park. It still bears his name as a memorial.

Johnny Wheels and the Swamp Donkeys deliver a round of "feel good music" for their audience that undeniably connects with a crowd. Johnny is one of a kind. At the age of 12 Johnny was in a tragic accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Johnny Wheels is the only frontman/harmonica playing quadriplegic in the world. With unmatched resiliency and a passion never seen before, Johnny and the band are bringin’ bitchin’ back. This band is a sight to behold onstage and when the crowd hears their music, they know it comes straight from the heart. This is truly a band of “brothers” that will give you something that you will never forget. Johnny headlines major festivals in the PNW.
