For the first time, North Central Public Health District is doing a coat drive to help support the Mid-Columbia Community Action Council.  Donations of coats for men and women in all sizes (no child coats please) can be dropped off at the NCPHD office, at 419 East 7th Street in The Dalles. 

We ask that coats be new or gently used and washed, and in good condition.  We are also asking for donations of new clean adult socks.  The coat drive starts today, November 28, and will conclude January 31.  NCPHD is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm., and is closed from noon to 1 p.m. each day. 

If anyone is interested in hosting a dropbox for coats at their place of business or a similar location, please contact Gloria Alvarez at gloriaa@ncphd.org or at 541-506-2699.

Mid-Columbia Senior Center presents MAHJONG!  Every Thursday & Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  

It's officially back!!  Come on down to the Senior Center and try your hand at Mahjong, a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century.  Beginners are welcome!!

BINGO is back every Thursday and Saturday!  Doors open at 4:00 pm.  Be ready to play by 5:30pm!  You'll have the chance to win some amazing cash prizes!  There are also concessions available from popcorn and candy to sandwiches and chips.  Enjoy an evening of fun while supporting the Center. 

Learn how to create daily nature sketches.  Drawing what we find outside helps to transform a daily walk from an obligation to something to savor.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum will be hosting its annual Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 3rd from 9 am to 5 pm. As a community thank you, the museum is offering free admission all day.

There will be complimentary hot cocoa, cider, and cookies offered. Visitors will enjoy live holiday music throughout the day. Get 10% off all merchandise at the museum store. Live raptor programs will take place at 11 am and 2 pm.

This day is the museum’s chance to thank everyone for their support during the past year by offering free museum admission. Celebrate the holidays with complimentary cookies, hot cider, and cocoa. Santa Claus will visit from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and free activities for kids will take place from 10 am to 2 pm. Share what you can to help those who are less fortunate during the holidays by bringing a non-perishable food item, blanket, or winter coat to donate to local families in need.

Gift Locally! Columbia River Trading Company, the museum store, is open 7 days a week, 9 am to 5 pm. The store showcases products from dozens of artisans and suppliers from the Columbia River Gorge and the Pacific Northwest. Join us for an exciting virtual chat with the highly-acclaimed and award winning novelist, Geraldine Brooks in conversation about her most recent New York Times Bestselling novel Horse. Brooks braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history. 

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse--one studying the stallion's bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

About the Author: Australian-born Geraldine Brooks is an author and journalist who grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney, and attended Bethlehem College Ashfield and the University of Sydney. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 2006 for her novel March. Her first novel, Year of Wonders, is an international bestseller, and People of the Book is a New York Times bestseller translated into 20 languages. She is also the author of the nonfiction works Nine Parts of Desire and Foreign Correspondence.  Brooks married author Tony Horwitz. They have two sons and two dogs. They divide their time between homes in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and Sydney, Australia.

Take a driving tour through ELFF Drive and see decorated fire trucks, and other displays,

Santa and Sparky the Fire Dog will be there too.

Firefighters will be on site to collect  your non-perishable food or cash donations

In partnership with:  Salvation Army, St. Vincent dePaul, and The Dalles Lions

All food and cash donations go directly to local food pantries

For the first time, North Central Public Health District is doing a coat drive to help support the Mid-Columbia Community Action Council.  Donations of coats for men and women in all sizes (no child coats please) can be dropped off at the NCPHD office, at 419 East 7th Street in The Dalles. 

We ask that coats be new or gently used and washed, and in good condition.  We are also asking for donations of new clean adult socks.  The coat drive starts today, November 28, and will conclude January 31.  NCPHD is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm., and is closed from noon to 1 p.m. each day. 

If anyone is interested in hosting a dropbox for coats at their place of business or a similar location, please contact Gloria Alvarez at gloriaa@ncphd.org or at 541-506-2699.

NCPHD has previously held a blanket drive each January, but is doing a coat drive this year instead.

You’re invited to explore early-American history during an online afternoon conversation with Pulitzer Prize winning historian Nicole Eustace as she discusses her 2022 award winning book Covered With Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America.

On the eve of a major treaty conference between Iroquois leaders and European colonists in the distant summer of 1722, two white fur traders attacked an Indigenous hunter and left him for dead near Conestoga, Pennsylvania. Though virtually forgotten today, this act of brutality set into motion a remarkable series of criminal investigations and cross-cultural negotiations that challenged the definition of justice in early America.

In Covered with Night, Dr. Eustace reconstructs the crime and its aftermath, bringing us into the overlapping worlds of white colonists and Indigenous peoples in this formative period. As she shows, the murder of the Indigenous man set the entire mid-Atlantic on edge, with many believing war was imminent. Isolated killings often flared into colonial wars in North America, and colonists now anticipated a vengeful Indigenous uprising. Frantic efforts to resolve the case ignited a dramatic, far-reaching debate between Native American forms of justice—centered on community, forgiveness, and reparations—and an ideology of harsh reprisal, unique to the colonies and based on British law, which called for the killers’ swift execution. As Eustace powerfully contends, the colonial obsession with “civility” belied the reality that the Iroquois, far from being the barbarians of the white imagination, acted under a mantle of sophistication and humanity as they tried to make the land- and power-hungry colonials understand their ways. 

About the Author: Nicole Eustace is a professor of history at New York University. A historian of the early modern Atlantic and the early United States, she specializes in the history of emotion. She is author of Pulitzer-Prize winning Covered with Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America, as well as Passion Is the Gale: Emotion, Power, and the Coming of the American Revolution and of 1812: War and the Passions of Patriotism as well as coeditor of Warring for America: Cultural Contests in the Era of 1812.

Jon's Story Telling Workshop on December 18th includes a free ticket to his Fire in the Meth Lab show.

For the first time, North Central Public Health District is doing a coat drive to help support the Mid-Columbia Community Action Council.  Donations of coats for men and women in all sizes (no child coats please) can be dropped off at the NCPHD office, at 419 East 7th Street in The Dalles. 

We ask that coats be new or gently used and washed, and in good condition.  We are also asking for donations of new clean adult socks.  The coat drive starts today, November 28, and will conclude January 31.  NCPHD is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm., and is closed from noon to 1 p.m. each day. 

If anyone is interested in hosting a dropbox for coats at their place of business or a similar location, please contact Gloria Alvarez at gloriaa@ncphd.org or at 541-506-2699.

NCPHD has previously held a blanket drive each January, but is doing a coat drive this year instead.

Empower Yoga welcomes Snapdragon Yoga!

Snapdragon Yoga is a space where magic, movement, and mindfulness work hand in hand to create story-driven yoga flows for children.  We explore the positive ways that moving together benefits our social skills and spacial awareness and, more importantly, enhances the fun.  Our Little (and Big) Snapdragons will find more than just yoga in these spaces but also dance, games, and crafts!  Join us as we explore castles in faraway kingdoms or dive beneath the surface into the deep blue sea!

Join Empower Yoga in welcoming Snapdragon Yoga to our community!  December 19-23 @ 4:00pm  $10 per child.  $35 per child for the week!  While the kids take an adventurous journey on their mats,  you can enjoy beautiful downtown The Dalles and shop local OR enjoy a yoga class yourself!  We can't wait to empower the next generation of yoga practitioners!

Shop from participating businesses between November 25 - December 24th, stamp your passport and be entered in to win a weekend getaway for 2 in the gorge! 

To enter you must receive 10 stamps for qualifying purchases and turn in your passport by December 24th to any of the businesses.
