50 Million Years of Tumultuous Geologic History

Retired geoscientist Lloyd DeKay heads up the Columbia Gorge Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute.   He will trace the massive volcanic eruptions, landslides and earthquakes that formed the Gorge, with emphasis on the catastrophic floods that sculpted some of the geologic wonders and beauty we marvel at today. 

Admission is free for the February programs.  Donations gladly accepted!  -  Downstairs monitor for those unable to climb stairs.

Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association’s Jazz Collective Big Band Celebrates Valentine’s Day

Kick up your heels and CELEBRATE THE LOVE of the season.  We are sure St. Valentine would approve!

CGOA’s Jazz Collective Big Band performs Friday, February 10, 8-10 pm at the Elks Lodge in Hood River (304 Cascade Ave.)  Tickets are $10 for adults, and those under 18 are free. Come listen or dance to some great jazz classics and enjoy a drink from the Elks bar upstairs.  You’ll hear familiar tunes from Stan Kenton, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

Second Saturday

Please join us!  Ride in antique cars, watch the antique planes take off and land, enjoy living history at its finest!

Join us the Second Saturday of each month when WAAAM gets the engines running. Action occurs between 10am and 2pm. Lunch is served between 11am and 1pm.

Second Saturdays throughout the winter will be held indoors. Weather permitting, cars and airplanes will be taken outside. Otherwise, there will be indoor events including demonstrations, special exhibits and hands on experiences for visitors.

Our antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, military jeeps and engines all get their day in the sun when museum volunteers get to show visitors that this is not just a bunch of old, dead stuff ... that life goes on for our artifacts!

What Our Volunteers Have to Say:

"A visit to WAAAM on a Second Saturday is bound to make you realize just how easy life is today. Take for instance, the process of starting a car. People don't even give it a thought these days, but in 1917, it may have taken a half an hour just to get the oil warm enough to crank a Model T's engine to life!

"Life was certainly slower in those days, and knowing about how life was back then helps us appreciate so much more what we have today.

VINEYARDS AND WINERIES OF THE COLUMBIA GORGE

The Pines 1852 owner and vintner Lonnie Wright first came to his century-old vineyard on Mill Creek in 1982.  He expanded the vineyard and established his own winery in 2001.  Through his vineyard management skills, he worked with others in the industry to define the Columbia Gorge was a wine region.  Come hear how the Columbia Gorge wine region from Hood River/White Salmon to Maryhill went from one winery in 1980 to 40 in 2020.

History enthusiasts and other like-minded individuals are invited to celebrate Oregon's birthday after the presentation, at 3:30 p.m. The Wasco County Historical Society will offer cake and informational sharing on the year following the Regional History Forum.

Gorge Sinfonietta Conductor, Mark Steighner worked with Cody Johnson for several months to arrange the music for orchestra, and the Sinfonietta will present its world premiere.  The composer and writer will be in attendance.  It is a great opportunity for local audiences to meet one of the rising star composers in media. 

"Composer Cody Matthew Johnson and poet Andrew Smithers created their "Vanitas" for speaker and orchestra as a meditation on current events in America.  Somewhere between poetry and rap, the text of "Vanitas" explores the social and political discourse and conflicts of recent years in a thoughtful and challenging way.  Its language is direct, moving and mesmerizing."    Mark Steighner, Gorge Sinfonietta Conductor and Artistic Director Emeritus

Saturday, February 18th

Her Name Was Eleanor:  Teacher, Dancer, Equestrian, Activist 

Linda Wilson was Eleanor Borg's student and helped develop the mural honoring her teacher that was painted in the 2022 MuralFest.  Eleanor shared her boundless enthusiasm for dance, acrobatics, ballet, and horses with hundreds of children from the 1950s through the 1970s.  Former students are invited to share memories.  

Admission is free for the February programs.  Donations gladly accepted!  -  Downstairs monitor for those unable to climb stairs.

Gorge Sinfonietta Conductor, Mark Steighner worked with Cody Johnson for several months to arrange the music for orchestra, and the Sinfonietta will present its world premiere.  The composer and writer will be in attendance.  It is a great opportunity for local audiences to meet one of the rising star composers in media. 

"Composer Cody Matthew Johnson and poet Andrew Smithers created their "Vanitas" for speaker and orchestra as a meditation on current events in America.  Somewhere between poetry and rap, the text of "Vanitas" explores the social and political discourse and conflicts of recent years in a thoughtful and challenging way.  Its language is direct, moving and mesmerizing."    Mark Steighner, Gorge Sinfonietta Conductor and Artistic Director Emeritus

Programs begin at 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs courtroom of the 1859 courthouse, 410 West 2nd Place, The Dalles behind the Chamber of Commerce / Visitor's Center

Mapping Fort Dalles:  Then and Now

Local historian and professional archeologist Eric Gleason traces the legacy of Fort Dalles from 1859 to the present.  Overlaying historical maps onto the modern maps of the city reveals the relationship of the historic fort to the town and suggests locations for further archeological investigations. 

Admission is free for the February programs.  Donations gladly accepted!  -  Downstairs monitor for those unable to climb stairs. 

Coffee and cookies will be served.
