9/1/2022 -9/10/2022 | Developed by Curator of Education at Maryhill Museum of Art, Louise Palermo, The Exquisite Gorge Project II: Fiber Arts features 13 regional fiber artists working with communities along 220 miles of the Columbia River from the Willamette Confluence to the Snake River Confluence.Artistic Director for the project is artist Tammy Jo Wilson. Each artist will design an original artwork collaborating with a Community Partner and community members from their assigned stretch of river. Artists will create unique installations, sculpture, and innovative designs attached to that specific site, and engage with educational opportunities to inspire and educate about fiber arts. There will be resources developed, including maps and guides to encourage visitation to each site. Each artwork will portray a section of the river itself and will connect to the next section. The project is inspired by the Surrealist art practice "Exquisite Corpse," where participants took turns drawing sections of a body on a piece of paper folded to hide each succession contribution. When unfolded, a whole body was revealed to show each contribution. In the case of The Exquisite Gorge Project II, the Columbia River will become the "body" that unifies the collaboration between artists and communities, revealing a 66-foot work that tells 10 conceptual stories (plus a frontispiece) of the Columbia River and its people.A culminating Festival of Fiber Arts will be held Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Maryhill Museum of Art, where each free-standing "exquisite corpse" section will be brought together to reveal the continuous sculpture. The undulating finished piece -- a fiber interpretation of the Columbia River and the communities along a 220-mile stretch -- is on view at the museum through September 10, 2022.

Also, the exhibit features artworks created by artists and publishers seeking to capitalize upon the growing worldwide interest in American ornithology. These talented bird artists include John James Audubon, Daniel Giraud Elliot, Joseph Wolf, and Titian Ramsey Peale. This beautiful avian imagery is complemented by historical commentary, species traits, and information on current bird status. The prints are framed in handcrafted Butternut molding. more info... |

9/8/2022 | Showing now through December 16th, this collection of vintage engravings illustrates the North American birds of the Trans-Mississippi frontier West (including Alaska), as portrayed by wildlife artists of note. The exhibit is partially a derivative of advancing 19th-century governmental survey parties, which were instructed to document the natural history features of these mostly unknown territories. |
9/8/2022 -9/10/2022 | Developed by Curator of Education at Maryhill Museum of Art, Louise Palermo, The Exquisite Gorge Project II: Fiber Arts features 13 regional fiber artists working with communities along 220 miles of the Columbia River from the Willamette Confluence to the Snake River Confluence.Artistic Director for the project is artist Tammy Jo Wilson.

9/8/2022 | Join us in conversation with bestselling author and expert in child development, Dr. Michele Borba, as she discusses her book, Thrivers: Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine. Data shows that today’s youth are the loneliest, most stressed, and risk-averse on record. Though well-educated, they are failing to launch in real life. So how can we teach them to be mentally strong and more successful? Dr. Michele Borba empowers educators and parents to help kids thrive in today’s fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world. Through her research, she found the difference between those who struggle and those who succeed comes down to the personal traits that set Thrivers apart and set them up for happiness and a greater potential later in life. She offers practical, actionable ways to develop these Thrivers traits for kids and shows you how to teach them to cope today so that they can flourish tomorrow in school and life. These are lessons that will last a lifetime. more info... |

9/14/2022 | Showing now through December 16th, this collection of vintage engravings illustrates the North American birds of the Trans-Mississippi frontier West (including Alaska), as portrayed by wildlife artists of note. The exhibit is partially a derivative of advancing 19th-century governmental survey parties, which were instructed to document the natural history features of these mostly unknown territories. |

The event is free to attend.“The mission of Oregon Law Center is to achieve justice for the low-income communities of Oregon. OLC represents Oregonians at or below 125% of the federal poverty line. 9/27/2022 | Join us for an afternoon with Pulitzer Prize finalist and PEN/Faulkner Award winner Hernan Diaz, author of In the Distance and Trust. Diaz holds a Ph.D. from NYU and edits, the Spanish-language journal Revista Hispánica Moderna, at Columbia University. Diaz’s new book, Trust, is set during the roar of the 1920s around the Wall Street tycoon Benjamin Rask and his wife, Helen. Together, they have risen to the top of the world of seemingly endless wealth–all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit. Hernan Diaz’s Trust elegantly puts these competing narratives into conversation with one another—and in tension with the perspective of one woman bent on disentangling fact from fiction. The result is a novel that spans over a century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation. About the author: Hernan Diaz is the author of two novels translated into more than twenty languages. His first novel, In the Distance, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award. He has also written a book of essays, and his work has appeared in The Paris Review, Granta, Playboy, The Yale Review, McSweeney’s, and elsewhere. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Award, the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, and a fellowship from the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. |
