10/1/2022 | Showing now through December 16th, this collection of vintage engravings illustrates the North American birds of the Trans-Mississippi frontier West (including Alaska), as portrayed by wildlife artists of note. The exhibit is partially a derivative of advancing 19th-century governmental survey parties, which were instructed to document the natural history features of these mostly unknown territories. Also, the exhibit features artworks created by artists and publishers seeking to capitalize upon the growing worldwide interest in American ornithology. These talented bird artists include John James Audubon, Daniel Giraud Elliot, Joseph Wolf, and Titian Ramsey Peale. This beautiful avian imagery is complemented by historical commentary, species traits, and information on current bird status. The prints are framed in handcrafted Butternut molding. more info... |
10/1/2022 | Join fiber artist Kathy O'Hern in this introduction to the technique of Botanical Printing, also called “ECO-Dyeing”. Certain leaves and flowers, which you will learn about, contain properties that allow their image to be permanently transferred to another material - such as cotton, silk, wool, paper, leather, or other various textiles. This occurs through a process that includes moisture, heat, and time. After an introduction and demonstration, each participant will prepare a design of their own on a prepared silk scarf. You will “bundle” your scarf to prepare it for heating. While the bundles are steaming for 90 minutes, you will be introduced to the process of printing on watercolor paper. Those taking this workshop will learn the basics of botanical printing, and take home a printed silk scarf and a few paper samples. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. An apron is helpful to keep clothes from getting stained. Instructor Bio: Kathy O’Hern, is a fiber artist and gardener who has lived in The Dalles since 2014. She is a hand weaver and natural dyer. Kathy learned the Botanical Printing technique in 2016 while at a weaving conference in Kalispell, MT. Since then she has both attended, and taught, several workshops on the subject. more info... |

Tickets are $50 person (Purchase Tickets via Eventbrite, link provided below) How do you talk about death with a dying loved one? This film examines the relationships between doctors and patients nearing the end of life, and how the medical profession can better help people navigate mortality. 10/15/2022 | Learn how to tailor a reinforced paper cover to a stack of folded sections in a traditional binding technique dating back to medieval Germany. Learn how to use leaves and flowers to permanently transfer their image to cotton, silk, wool, paper, leather, or other various textiles. There are many different bindings that fall under the category of long-stitch, but most are distinguishable by long stitches that attach signatures directly to the cover. This binding technique is versatile and can be applied to multiple materials, making it an excellent option for any book project. Long stitch bindings are non-adhesive and are relatively easy and quick to sew. The finished books can lay flat, making them particularly well suited to sketchbooks and journals. The sewing technique is centuries-old, originating in medieval Germany, and historically can be found on limp parchment bindings. more info... |

10/18/2022 | Join us in conversation with popular CNN Anchor, Zain E. Asher, as she discusses her moving and inspiring memoir Where the Children Take Us. In Where the Children Take Us, Zain E. Asher, tells the story of her mother's harrowing fight to raise four children as a widowed immigrant in South London. There is tragedy in this tale, but it is not a tragedy. Drawing on tough-love parenting strategies, Obiajulu Ejiofor teaches her sons and daughters to overcome the daily pressures of poverty, crime and prejudice--and much more. With her relentless support, the children exceed all expectations--becoming a CNN anchor, an Oscar-nominated actor--Asher's older brother Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)--a medical doctor, and a thriving entrepreneur. When grief threatens to engulf her fractured family after a fatal accident, Obiajulu, suddenly a single mother in a foreign land, refuses to accept defeat. As her children veer down the wrong path, she instills a family book club with Western literary classics, testing their resolve and challenging their deeper understanding. Desperate for inspiration, she plasters newspaper clippings of Black success stories on the walls and hunts for overachieving neighbors to serve as role models, all while running Shakespeare theatre lines with her son and finishing homework into the early morning with Zain. When distractions persist, she literally cuts the TV cord and installs a residential pay phone. The story of a woman who survived genocide, famine, poverty, and crushing grief to rise from war torn Africa to the streets of South London and eventually the drawing rooms of Buckingham Palace, Where the Children Take Us is an unforgettable portrait of strength, tenacity, love, and perseverance embodied in one towering woman. About the Author: Born and raised in London, Zain Asher graduated from Oxford University where she studied French and Spanish and graduated with a distinction in oral Spanish. In 2006, she earned an MS from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. Asher is an anchor for CNN International based in New York. She anchors the new global news program, One World with Zain Asher, and also hosts Marketplace Africa, CNN International's weekly business show about the continent and its place within global markets. Where the Children Take Us, a memoir based on Asher’s childhood, is her first book and was published in April 2022. |

We hope you will join us in showing support for a local author who also happens to be one of those outstanding CGCC instructors.Join Tina Ontiveros for Writer's Talks at The Dalles Art Center on Thursday, October 20th, at 7:00 pm, to hear her read from her memoir, Rough House. Tina is a writer, teacher, and bookseller based in the Pacific Northwest. She was raised below the federal poverty line, living mostly with her single mother at the edge of the Oregon desert, but often with her constantly migrating dad in small timber towns around the Pacific Northwest. While some elements of Ontiveros's story are universal, others are indelibly grounded in the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest at the end of the twentieth century, as the lumber industry shifted and contracted. Tracing her childhood through the working-class towns and forests of Washington and Oregon, Ontiveros explores themes of love and loss, parents and children, and her own journey to a different kind of adulthood. more info... |

When the first section of the road opened in 1915, it became the first paved highway in the Pacific Northwest. It is a celebration of the completion of the Historic Columbia River Highway. 10/25/2022 | Join us for a captivating conversation with historical fiction writer Kate Quinn as she discusses her newest release, The Diamond Eye, and her other works. Quinn is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Rose Code. Quinn’s latest book, The Diamond Eye, offers an unforgettable World War II tale of a quiet bookworm who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper. Based on a true story. In 1937 in the snowbound city of Kiev (now known as Kyiv), wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son - but Hitler's invasion of Ukraine and Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious young woman to deadly sniper - a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour. Still reeling from war wounds and devastated by loss, Mila finds herself isolated and lonely in the glittering world of Washington, DC - until an unexpected friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and an even more unexpected connection with a silent fellow sniper offer the possibility of happiness. But when an old enemy from Mila's past joins forces with a deadly new foe lurking in the shadows, Lady Death finds herself battling her own demons, and enemy bullets, in the deadliest duel of her life. About the Author: Kate Quinn is a New York Times bestselling author of historical fiction. She is a native of Southern California, and she attended Boston University, where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in classical voice. A lifelong history buff, she has written four novels in the Empress of Rome Saga and two books set in the Italian Renaissance before turning to the 20th century with The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Rose Code. She and her husband now live in Seattle with their rescue dogs. |

10/30/2022 | Showing now through December 16th, this collection of vintage engravings illustrates the North American birds of the Trans-Mississippi frontier West (including Alaska), as portrayed by wildlife artists of note. |
