TOPIC: It’s Almost Here – Annual Spring Community Clean Up - May 6, 2023
CONTACT: Public Works Department (541) 296-5401
FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY
It’s Almost Here!
The 35th Annual Spring Community Clean Up will take place the first Saturday of May. The Dalles residents are encouraged to join in our annual spring cleaning event on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Yard debris and large items, such as furniture, may be disposed of at the Old Wasco County maintenance yard at the corner of West 10th Street and Walnut Street only on this date and time. Unauthorized dumping at the site outside of these hours could jeopardize the future of this event.
This year the City is again asking citizens to make a special effort to prevent unsightly damage to street trees that have low hanging branches. Trimming branches before collision breaks branches is healthier for trees. Tree trimming also prevents damage to tall vehicles like garbage trucks and school buses. On Community Clean Up day, up to two standard sized pickup loads per household of tree trimmings can be disposed of for free.
Citizens are encouraged to separate usable goods from trash. Gently used items may be donated to the on-site Reuse Fair. Event participants may pick up “new” treasures from the Reuse Fair area at no cost.
Lines for the cleanup event are long and move slowly. Please reduce traffic congestion by driving to the collection site going westbound on 10th Street and then turn right onto Walnut Street so waiting trucks can pull to the side of the road. Please drive safely when on site.
Yard debris will be recycled so separate it from trash. Put leaves, grass and clippings in paper bags. Bundle branches with string or twine.
Friends and neighbors are encouraged to help the elderly or handicapped dispose of unwanted items.
Please bring household clean up items only to this annual event. No kitchen garbage or food waste. No tires, refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners. No computers, monitors or televisions. No dirt, rock or animal waste (manure). No business or commercial waste will be accepted.
For more information about the Annual Spring Community Clean Up is on the City Hall Facebook page or go to thedalles.org.

Second Saturday

Visit us on any Second Saturday at the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Muesum and have lots of fun.

Please join us!  Ride in antique cars, watch the antique planes take off and land, enjoy living history at its finest!

Join us the Second Saturday of each month when WAAAM gets the engines running. Action occurs between 10am and 2pm. Lunch is served between 11am and 1pm.

Second Saturdays throughout the winter will be held indoors. Weather permitting, cars and airplanes will be taken outside. Otherwise, there will be indoor events including demonstrations, special exhibits and hands on experiences for visitors.

Our antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, military jeeps and engines all get their day in the sun when museum volunteers get to show visitors that this is not just a bunch of old, dead stuff ... that life goes on for our artifacts!

What Our Volunteers Have to Say:

"A visit to WAAAM on a Second Saturday is bound to make you realize just how easy life is today. Take for instance, the process of starting a car. People don't even give it a thought these days, but in 1917, it may have taken a half an hour just to get the oil warm enough to crank a Model T's engine to life!

"Life was certainly slower in those days, and knowing about how life was back then helps us appreciate so much more what we have today.

"Please join us on a Second Saturday of the month ... or on any day ... and take a step back in time with us."

                  —Judy Newman, WAAAM Volunteer

OREGON TRAIL RALLY, MAY 19-21, 2023!

Oregon Trail Rally is a the only 3-day rally event in the Championship that takes place in urban Portland, OR and through the Columbia Gorge farmlands outside the city.

Friday night stages with fan interaction at Portland International Raceway, with 3 days of rally action in Portland and the Columbia Gorge.

This year's Oregon Trail Rally is the fourth round of the American Rally Association (ARA) National Championship, which includes eight events spread across the nation. The three-day Oregon Trail Rally offers a special challenge to rally teams with its diverse stages, high speeds, technical turns, and changing road surfaces.

There's a hierarchy of insanity in motor sports.  Normal people think all racers are crazy.  Folks who race sedans think people in open-wheel cars are nuts.  People who race cars of any kind think motorcycle racers are absolutely off their meds.  But there's one group that everyone agrees is made up of the most extreme, the most daring, and absolutely craziest peple in racing - RALLY RACERS.

CGOA Jazz Collective Big Band presents
The Afro Cuban Fusion

As most people know, jazz is one of America’s most original and important genres of music. Without jazz, there wouldn’t be later forms of popular music like rock, funk, and rhythm and blues. Jazz is the foundation for all of them.

Of course, jazz is the name for a dizzying array of musical styles, beginning in the late 19th century. Ragtime, blues, Dixieland and swing are just a few types of music under the broad category of jazz.

Like America itself, the musical elements of jazz are very much a melting pot of African and European styles and techniques. Another, later, influence on jazz was the music of Central and South America–specifically Brazil. Historians and lovers of jazz call this form of jazz, “Afro-Cuban,” because it reflects its Black roots mixed with the dance rhythms of the Caribbean and South America.

To honor this style, and some of the great Latin composers and arrangers, the CGOA Jazz Collective Big Band and director Michael Paul present “The Afro-Cuban Fusion,” two concerts on May 19 and 21. The concerts will include big band arrangements by jazz giants like Chick Corea, Paquito d'Rivera and many more. If dance rhythms like mambo, cha cha and tango make you want to move, this is the concert for you. Afro-Cuban music is high energy, passionate and exciting.

“The Afro Cuban Fusion” will be Friday, May 19 at 7 PM and Sunday, May 21 at 2 PM. Concerts are in Bowe Theatre at Hood River Valley High School, 1220  Indian Creek Rd in Hood River. Tickets are $25 for adults ($15 for CGOA members), $5 for youth ages 10-17, and free for kids under 10. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. A limited number of $5 tickets are available for those with Oregon Trail/SNAP cards or the Washington equivalent.
For information about all CGOA events, visit gorgeorchestra.org, or check out gorgeorchestra on Facebook and Instagram.

The all-day event will feature a parade, food & craft vendor market, plant sale, silent auction fundraiser benefiting the Life Raft pantry, petting zoo, and a special performance by the Portland Taiko Drummers Ensemble. The parade will start the day off at 9 a.m. and the Portland Taiko Drummers will begin their performance in Kaiser Park at 11 a.m.
