Second Annual Great Gorge Melt: Grilled Cheese & Quesadillas for a Cause

The Dalles, OR —  This March, Columbia Gorge Food Bank invites local restaurants to join the second annual Great Gorge Melt — an opportunity to make a real difference in the movement against hunger across Wasco, Hood River and Sherman Counties. Last year, Columbia Gorge Food Bank saw 83,100 visits to food assistance sites through our service area. We are seeing record numbers of visits. By joining, restaurants become key partners in fighting hunger and demonstrating the power of community action.

We’re inviting restaurants in the region to participate by offering their own twist on a grilled cheese sandwich or quesadilla. Throughout March, when you purchase one of these dishes at participating restaurants, a portion of the proceeds will go directly to Columbia Gorge Food Bank to support hunger relief efforts in the Gorge.

“By supporting your local restaurant, you’re also supporting a great cause,” said Leah Hall, Community Philanthropy Manager for Columbia Gorge Food Bank. “After last year’s success, we’re excited to partner with local restaurants again to help both our community and the fight against hunger.”

The Great Gorge Melt is a chance for restaurants and diners to join forces in supporting those in need across our region. Participating restaurants will receive promotional support, including social media features, and recognition on Columbia Gorge Food Bank’s website and event materials. Plus, you’ll attract diners eager to support local businesses and give back to their community.

Columbia Gorge Food Bank works with over 40 food pantries, meal sites and delivery programs across The Gorge, ensuring that thousands of individuals and families have access to nourishing food. In the inaugural year of the Great Gorge Melt, the event raised funds and awareness to support these efforts.

Join us now to take action against hunger and highlight your restaurant's role in strengthening our community. Whether you’re serving up a classic grilled cheese, a bold quesadilla, or a creative twist on these beloved comfort foods, we want you on board!

To sign up or learn more about how your restaurant can participate, contact Leah Hall at 541-490-4595 or email lhall@columbiagorgefoodbank.org.

Together, we can make an impact in the fight against hunger. Join us for the Great Gorge Melt this March and help provide hope and nourishment to those who need it most.

ABOUT Columbia Gorge Food Bank

Columbia Gorge Food Bank is a Regional Food Bank, directly supporting hunger relief efforts in Sherman, Wasco, and Hood River Counties. We are a member of the Oregon Food Bank Network, connecting statewide food resources to our local community of pantries and partners. At Columbia Gorge Food Bank, we hold people experiencing hunger and food insecurity at the center of our actions and decisions. The American creator of modern dance, Fuller (1862-1928) invented a completely new kind of spectacle which combined dance, fabric and movement. She also pioneered the ingenious use of electricity for the stage, even building a glass floor so that she could be lit from below. Anyone who has been to a rock concert has seen a modern version of her lighting designs. Fuller propelled herself into swirling abstractions that made audiences gasp and she immediately understood the importance of protecting her ownership of these innovations. Always struggling against a flood of imitators, Fuller was the first choreographer to attempt to copyright her dances and sued to protect her work as early as 1893.

Dear community members and neighbors,

Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 2nd from 2:00-4:00pm!

We’re excited to invite you to the Community Legacy Initiative at The Ruins in Hood River, an event designed to help you shape your legacy and ensure that the values that matter to you most endure for generations to come.

Many families are unprepared for this responsibility—only 35% have a will, and even fewer include charitable intentions. That’s why a group of passionate local non-profits, including The Next Door Inc., Thrive Hood River, Gorge Grown, Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP), Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC), and the Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC) Foundation, have come together to offer this event aimed at empowering our community to take control of their future.

During this free event, you will be able to:

·                  Meet experts in financial planning, law, and more

·                  Hear from a panel of professionals about the benefits and how-tos of estate planning

·                  Receive free resources and handouts to help you plan your financial future

·                  Connect with local non-profits who will be tabling at the event

·                  Explore how to include charitable intentions in your estate planning

This event is designed to educate the community about the profound impact of estate planning, connect families with empowering tools, and inspire charitable giving to organizations that are bettering our community. Spots are limited, and we encourage pre-registration to reserve your place. Light snacks will be provided.

RSVP now at our Eventbrite here!

Questions? See more details on the attached flyer. For more information, please email development@nextdoorinc.org

We hope to see you there and look forward to building a stronger, more connected future for our community.

Event Description:

Oregon white oak trees seem abundant, almost weedy in the gorge. They are the least showy of our native hardwoods and often look as though they are falling apart. So why in 2020 did a diverse group of stakeholders, band together for a closer look at these native trees? Why are oaks being called a lifeboat? A safe-zone for species trying to survive the subtle (and not so subtle) changes that are accompanying our changing climate? And how might new efforts to conserve and restore oak woodlands in the Gorge impact our landscapes, people, and even economy? Join Lindsay Cornelius, Manager of the East Cascades Oak Partnership, to learn why oaks make such excellent neighbors in a place prone to drought, fires, heat, and wind. And explore how these sometimes decrepit-looking trees are actually supporting vibrant life - more so than any other tree species in the Gorge.

Speaker Bio:

Lindsay Cornelius has been observing and managing oak habitats in the Columbia River Gorge and East Cascades for more than 20 years as a natural area manager for Columbia Land Trust and most recently as the manager of the East Cascades Oak Partnership.  She earned a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from Western Washington University but the applied learning she's done over the last two decades restoring, enhancing, and making mistakes in oak woodlands has earned her a PhD in curiosity.

Livestream:

A Livestream of this program will be accessible on the night of the event.

Columbia Center for the Arts presents the film Daaaaaali! For journalist Judith Rochant (Anaïs Demoustier) the assignment to interview renowned artist Salvador Dalí is a great career opportunity–if only he would agree to sit still and answer a single question. What begins as a 15- minute conversation blows up into a bonafide cinematographic documentary portrait, provided the world’s most enormous cameras are available to film it. As Judith’s interview is delayed, detoured, disrupted, and deranged by Dalí’s inexhaustible self-regard, the journalist finds herself becoming the subject. The legendary painter’s artistry and ego know no bounds, and Daaaaaalí! dutifully casts no less than five actors (Edouard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, Giles Lellouche, Pio Marmaï, and Didier Flamand) as Salvador Dalí in this prismatic portrait. The prolific Quentin Dupieux’s latest comedy is an exercise in dream logic and surrealist homage, with the rug pulled out from under you again and again before you even manage to get up off the floor.
