Serious Theater presents a concert of the music written by jazz era greats Cole Porter and George Gershwin. Mezzo-soprano Anna Viemeister and baritone Jeremy Griffin return to The Dalles on Sunday September 3rd at 2:00 P.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church (10th and Union) to sing some of their most beloved songs.
With over 1,500 songs to his credit for Broadway, movies, and television, all characterized by their witty, urbane lyrics, Cole Porter (1891-1964) is described as almost inhumanly prolific. His most popular songs you will hear include “Don’t Fence Me In,” “Love for Sale,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Night and Day,” and others.
George and Ira Gershwin will always be remembered as the songwriting team whose voice was synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz Age. From 1924 until George’s death in 1937, the brothers wrote almost exclusively with each other, composing over two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollywood. “Someone to Watch Over Me,” They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Summertime,” “I Got Rhythm,” and “Embraceable You” are some of the favorites we present.
Anna and Jeremy team up with local musicians: pianist Garry Estep, bassist Paul Viemeister, and drummer Rick Cowart to provide a great afternoon of entertainment.
This concert is being presented in association with the Oregon Cultural Foundation Fred W. Fields Fund.
Admission is free and donations will be accepted to help continue the Serious Theater concert/recital series at Zion Lutheran Church.

Join us for the Opening Night Party for our September show. Lori Mason is a textile artist who creates quilts and has a background in textile design. She comes from a multi-generational family of artists and architects and learned to sew at age ten. This exhibit will showcase the breadth and depth of her career from designing fabrics to quilts and more.
Lori Mason is a maker and a storyteller. The artist has worked steadfast and quietly for decades, exploring her craft and various mediums of textile art. Eventually, Mason found the deepest meaning and satisfaction in her work through creating memorial quilts for families to honor the passing of a loved one. The September exhibit, Lori Mason: A Life in Pattern is an invitation to see the breadth of this singular artist’s work. This is the first ever exhibition of her memorial quilt work.

3 Leg Torso formed in 1996 as a violin, cello and accordion trio with the mission of creating original modern chamber music for their unique instrumentation. Over the following years, the ensemble has expanded both its musical mission and its size to become a quartet that now performs original compositions based on an eclectic synthesis of chamber music, tango, klezmer, latin, and Roma (Gypsy) music. As principal composers, founding members Béla R. Balogh (violin, trumpet, octave mandolin) and Courtney Von Drehle (accordion, saxophone) provide the core of 3 Leg Torso's sound. They are joined by the consummate mallets & percussion of T.J. Arko and the gentleman of the acoustic bass, Bill Athens.
The ensemble's history began with street performances, which they titled Meestering and has led to their releasing three award winning instrumental albums (3 Leg Torso, Astor in Paris, and Animals & Cannibals), East Coast and West Coast Tours, performances with symphony orchestras and a profile on National Public Radio's All Things Considered.
The cinematic nature of their music has led to work with many film makers, including Oscar nominated documentary artist Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), three short films with Teller (of Penn & Teller), two short films by Academy Award winning animator Joan Gratz The Dowager's Feast and The Dowager's Idyll, scoring With Hope and Help, a UNICEF funded documentary about living with AIDS in Thailand, and a feature in Oscar nominated King of Indie Animation Bill Plympton's Idiots & Angels. One of the ensemble's pieces has been used as the theme music for a Bosnian Television series, and the group's music was also featured in the 2012 National Geographic special Preparing for the Apocalypse.
In 2003, accordionist Courtney Von Drehle was awarded a fellowship at the Sundance Film Composer's Lab, and in 2010, his work on the Oscar nominated documentary The Final Inch was nominated for an Emmy Award.
3 Leg Torso has a full concert set of arrangements for symphony orchestra, which has brought them together for sold out performances with the Central Oregon Symphony, Rogue Valley Symphony, Newport Symphony Orchestra, Beaverton Symphony, Portland Festival Symphony, Pacific Crest Wind Symphony, and Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Composers Balogh and Von Drehle were commissioned to write a full-length piece, Sinfonia Misterioso, to celebrate the Metropolitan Youth Symphony's 35th anniversary gala concert.

Many people prefer not to talk about these topics - until there is a situation when they need to learn more. Often they have questions or they may not know which questions to ask. Learn more, before this situation happens. This class covers topics related to advance directives, hospice, death with dignity and other conscious end of life choices, end of life doula and grief. Carola Stepper, RN, CHPN, LAc is a former hospice nurse and the owner of Gorge End of Life Services, offering grief support and holistic end of life guide services.
