The Original Wasco County Courthouse is going public with the invitation to the June 1, 2024, Gorge Geology Tour.  Hurry to sign up to be able to beat the crowd.  We will have to cut off registrations when the bus is full.  Here's the info:

GORGE GEOLOGY TOUR WITH LLOYD DeKAY

JUNE 1, 2024

Meet at Original Wasco County Courthouse (410 West 2nd Place) at 8:30 a.m.

Lloyd gives orientation presentation

Tour commences - 12 to 15 stops at sites of geological significance

No-host lunch at either Bingen-White Salmon or Hood River

Tour ends back at OWCC around 3:30 p.m.

Forms to return:
...or return forms in person:  The Original Courthouse opens for the summer season, Thursday, May 2.  It will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays now through September.
Here is some addition information about the field trip and Lloyd DeKay, whose standing room only presentation at the OWCC Regional History Forum in February 2023 inspired sponsorship of the field trip.
The stunning and tranquil beauty of the Columbia River Gorge region belies a tumultuous geologic history.  That history spans about 50 million years of massive volcanoes and fissure eruptions, huge forces bending and breaking the rock layers, catastrophic Ice Age Floods, landslides and earthquakes.  In a 70 mile loop we'll visit stunning geologic evidence of that tumultuous geologic history.  We'll see forests, lakes and swamps that were buried by massive lava flows, look at huge faults and folds that deformed the landscape.  We'll imagine 1000 foot deep mud-choked floods remaking that landscape.  We'll even see the rusty remnants and stand in the vent area of a volcanic eruption.  When we're done  you may never see the Gorge the same way again.
Lloyd DeKay is a retired geologist and president of the Columbia River Gorge Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute.  He has a Master's Degree in Geological Oceanography and had a 27 year career in international oil exploration, working on projects in various parts of South America, Africa, SE Asia, and Europe while living in Houston, San Francisco, Nigeria and New Orleans.  His first exposure to the Gorge was a 1976 temp job with the Corps of Engineers working on the Bonneville Dam second powerhouse, and that exposure led in part to his retirement to White Salmon in 2007.  Since then he's had to learn about a whole new geological ralm as he's led field trips and given presentations about local geology on behalf of the Ice Age Floods Institute.

Johnny Wheels and the Swamp Donkeys deliver a round of "feel good music" for their audience that undeniably connects with a crowd. Johnny is one of a kind. At the age of 12 Johnny was in a tragic accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Johnny Wheels is the only frontman/harmonica playing quadriplegic in the world. With unmatched resiliency and a passion never seen before, Johnny and the band are bringin’ bitchin’ back. This band is a sight to behold onstage and when the crowd hears their music, they know it comes straight from the heart. This is truly a band of “brothers” that will give you something that you will never forget. Johnny headlines major festivals in the PNW.

The Dalles Civic Auditorium invites you to our comedy show on June 8th featuring the amazing Pedro D Gonzalez! This is the final show of a three-part series presented by D&D Comedy.

You've seen him on NBC, the Late Show with Stephen Colbert & more! Pedro Gonzalez is a Colombian American comedian based out of NYC. Besides touring the country as a stand up, Pedro is a staff writer on Freevee’s hit show Primo, based on the life of NY Times best seller, Shea Serrano.  He was a finalist on Stand Up NBC and New York Funniest, and also has the honor of being the first Latin American immigrant comedian to appear on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Pedro riffs on what is like to date, work and live in America when you were not born in America…and you have an accent…and your name is Pedro. His favorite thing about comedy is to defy stereotypes and challenge his audience’s point of view through intelligent humor.
Joining Pedro for a night of laughs are Portland based comedians, Dianna Potter and Drew Wilson-McGrath. Dianna brings a new perspective to comedy through her tales of living a life you could never imagine.... Sex, Drugs and Incarceration. Drew rants about not having a Dad (in a fun way), trying to be a dad to multiple stray cats (less fun - not recommended), and asking to be called daddy whenever he visits Jack in the Box (ssspicy).
Tickets start at only $20 in advance, the link to purchase tickets can be found at thedallescivic.com. Limited tables, groups and reserved tickets are available while supplies last. Tickets at the door will be $5 more. Due to mature content, this is an 18 & over show.

Coming from out of town and need a place to stay? Fairfield Inn will offer a discount if you show proof of ticket purchase!

THE DALLES ART CENTER PRESENTS ARTIST TALK:

THE FREEDOM SISTERS ROADSHOW

The Freedom Sisters Road Show is an exhibit of upcycled functional art by four regional artists: Barbara Kilkenny, Abigal Kaehler, Denise Jiminez and Jan Byrkit. This show is also a tribute to finding and celebrating joy. According to Chicago Gallery News, functional art is defined as, “Occupying the space between fine art and the everyday, functional art refers to aesthetic objects that serve utilitarian purposes. The genre is remarkably inclusive, it encompasses everything from furniture and lighting to dishes and even books.” Their connection as artists is their creative repurposing of used items as well as their understanding of their own unique interests and talents. The quartet have joined forced for this exhibit to showcase pieces created from a mindset that includes aesthetics and utility.

Sally Johnson will start off the evening with questions for the artists, then we'll end with questions from the audience. The proceeds from this event benefit The Dalles Art Center. Thank you to the Columbia Gorge Community College for your support.

“#GoFish” may be the hottest hashtag this summer for families in the Mid-Columbia Gorge area because of a free art engagement program for kids at The Dalles Art Center (TDAC). The School of Fish program is the name of the summer program designed to reel in families that provides free take-home art kits packed with art supplies and instructions to make colorful paper salmon!

Participants are invited back to TDAC for a School of Fish party will hang their paper salmon and create a school of fish in the gardens of TDAC! Starting on Thursday, June 20, families can stop into TDAC Thursdays – Saturdays from 11 am – 5 pm to pick up a School of Fish art kit (while supplies last). In addition to School of Fish, TDAC is offering Kids Create! every Saturday drop-in art classes from 10 – Noon all summer. TDAC’s famous Summer Art Camp kicks off on June 25 with six weeks of Art Camp for kids. See details at https://www.thedallesartcenter.org/education/classes-for-kids.

School of Fish kits include resources to make it easy for families to keep learning about salmon and explore the surrounding area. Salmon are a vibrant part of the Mid-Columbia Gorge area’s cultural history and ecology, and School of Fish celebrates this history, cultural and remarkable ecosystem that exists in the area. The Wasco County Cultural Trust, whose mission is to encourage projects and activities in the arts, heritage and humanities that relate to the priorities of the Wasco County Cultural plan, provided a grant to support the School of Fish project. Volunteers and individual donors provided time and resources to create the kits.

“What I love most about School of Fish is that it gives families in our area a way to engage in creativity and art at home and to then come together, like a school of fish, to create a public art display that celebrates kids’ art!” said Pam Westland, TDAC Board President. “We hope to give away all the kits and are eager to welcome everyone and their paper salmon back for our party on Saturday, September 7th at TDAC! I cannot wait to see the fish ‘swimming’ in the gardens at TDAC. #GoFish!
