Wyden To Hold Town Halls in Seven Oregon Counties
Senator’s upcoming in-person, open-to-all town halls April 1-7 will be in Wasco, Sherman, Morrow, Umatilla, Gilliam, Douglas and Jackson counties
Portland – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden today announced he will have open-to-all, in-person town halls from April 1-7 in Wasco, Sherman, Morrow, Umatilla, Gilliam, Douglas and Jackson counties.
Wyden has already held 15 town halls so far throughout Oregon in 2023 – and 1,042 town halls overall statewide in fulfillment of his pledge to hold at least one town hall each year in each of Oregon’s 36 counties.
“Open-to-all town halls shorten the distance between Oregon and Washington DC by providing opportunities for any Oregonian to ask questions, suggest good ideas and work toward solutions to challenges facing communities throughout our state,” Wyden said. “Whether they’re in the Gorge, Eastern Oregon or Southern Oregon, I encourage people of all ages to attend one of these community gatherings that show the rest of the country how democracy is alive and thriving in every nook and cranny of the state.”

CGOA Presents “Don’t Fear the Diva” with the Gorge Sinfonietta and Opera Cecilia
Whoever the “average music lover” is, if you asked them to describe opera they might use adjectives like “snooty,” “screaming singers,” “boring,” or “elitist.” Probably no form of music is so misunderstood. On April 1 and 2, the Gorge Sinfonietta and special guests Opera Cecilia hope to change all that with a program called “Don’t Fear the Diva: A Tour of Opera Through the Ages.”
First, said Sinfonietta conductor Mark Steighner, “an opera is nothing more than a play where everything is sung instead of spoken.” It’s an art form that stretches as far back as the ancient Greeks. It’s also the engine that powers such Broadway musicals as “Les Miserables,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Hamilton” and “Phantom of the Opera.”
“Those are hugely popular musicals and not classical operas, but the principal is the same. If you love “Hamilton” and “Les Mis,” you enjoy opera.”
So, why does opera have a bad rap? Steighner says that “in the late 1800’s and early 20th century, American musical culture was very influenced by Europe. Because opera was so popular in Europe, it became a symbol for old world traditions and appealed to the wealthy. At the same time, jazz was creating a whole new form of entertainment that was true popular music. So, very quickly, opera came to symbolize outdated culture, and jazz and, eventually, rock, was more relevant.”
“To be honest,” Steighner says, “there are some operas that are more about showing off singers’ voices than the drama.” But there are many operas with incredibly engaging, relatable, moving and hilarious stories. The opera “La Boheme” by Puccini is the story of struggling young artists in Paris. It was the inspiration for “Rent’s” very contemporary drama.
Opera Cecilia is based in Washougal, Washington and was founded by Tanis and Talor Gonzaga to “deliver opera like it has never been before,” and “reject the need for perfectionism in the production of classical music, and be a part of the new face of opera.” In other words, anything but stuffy or snooty. Tanis is a graduate of Hood River Valley High School and was a participant in the HRVHS choral program.
“Don’t Fear the Diva” offers music from the 18th through the 20th century, with everything being accessible, emotional, fun and tuneful. “It’s a program for everyone,” Steighner says, “from the long-time opera lover to the total novice. There’s nothing to be afraid of…except maybe falling in love with opera!”
“Don’t Fear the Diva ” programs are Saturday, April 1 at 7 PM and Sunday, April 2 at 2 PM at the Performing Arts Center at Wy’east Middle School, 3000 Wy’east Rd in Odell.
Tickets are $25 adults ($15 for CGOA Members), $5 youth ages 10-17, and free for kids under 10. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. Special $5 tickets are available for Oregon Trail/SNAP card holders.

Second Saturday
Please join us! Ride in antique cars, watch the antique planes take off and land, enjoy living history at its finest!
Join us the Second Saturday of each month when WAAAM gets the engines running. Action occurs between 10am and 2pm. Lunch is served between 11am and 1pm.
Second Saturdays throughout the winter will be held indoors. Weather permitting, cars and airplanes will be taken outside. Otherwise, there will be indoor events including demonstrations, special exhibits and hands on experiences for visitors.
Our antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, military jeeps and engines all get their day in the sun when museum volunteers get to show visitors that this is not just a bunch of old, dead stuff ... that life goes on for our artifacts!
What Our Volunteers Have to Say:
"A visit to WAAAM on a Second Saturday is bound to make you realize just how easy life is today. Take for instance, the process of starting a car. People don't even give it a thought these days, but in 1917, it may have taken a half an hour just to get the oil warm enough to crank a Model T's engine to life!
"Life was certainly slower in those days, and knowing about how life was back then helps us appreciate so much more what we have today.
"Please join us on a Second Saturday of the month ... or on any day ... and take a step back in time with us."
—Judy Newman, WAAAM Volunteer

9TH BIENNIAL ORGAN CRAWL
It is spring in The Dalles, and this year is an Organ Crawl year! April 16th 2023 celebrates the 9th Biennial Organ Crawl, which was started in 2007 by Robert Carsner (1940-2014).
The Dalles is a special place since we boast five (count them… five) pipe organs while many larger cities have none anymore. The preservation and appreciation of the pipe organs here in our fair city has come to the attention of the Portland branch of the American Guild of Organists. And the love we give to these majestic “King’s of Instruments” continues.
This year’s organ crawl starts at historic St. Peter’s Landmark in downtown The Dalles with Hood River organist Diana Beterbide on the even more historic 1907 Kilgen Organ which has retained its original configuration (except for adding an electric driven blower).
The crawl continues as Cheryl Ortega features the Wicks organ at the United Church of Christ Congregational (corner of 5th and Court Streets).
Next is local organist E.J. Howe playing the Reuter Organ at the First Church of Christ Scientist located at 701 Washington Street.
After that you will hear Heidi Kohne from Portland (who has been featured in many organ events here in The Dalles over the years) playing the 1905 Kimball organ at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 1805 Minnesota St.
Finally, you will hear local organist Garry Estep on the 1976 Phelps-d’Autremont organ at Zion Lutheran Church located at the corner of 10th and Union Streets.
A reception will be held at Zion ELCA after the concert is over.
Admission is free, and donations go toward continuation of this The Dalles tradition, as well as assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of our beautiful instruments.

The 2023 Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour
Everything emerges in spring, including the art
April 21, 22, 23, 2023, 10am - 5pm
Spring is white mountains, green valleys, and pink hills studded with blooming fruit trees and a rainbow of wildflowers. More emerging beauty comes in the form of art, because spring is also the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour.
This annual tour, now in its 17th year, features 40 local artists showcasing a diverse variety of work - from painting to ceramics, jewelry to textiles, wood working to photography, metalwork to glass, and more.
Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour invites art lovers to meet artists in their studio spaces - to experience art as work, craft, process, and inspiration. It is a free, self-guided tour of individual artist studios and work spaces located throughout the Mid-Columbia Gorge regional area. Featured artist's studios are dotted on the map in all four mid-Columbia counties: Skamania, Klickitat, Hood River, and Wasco. Take advantage of the three days, April 21 to 23, to visit as many studios as you can. Or, if you have limited time, just drop in to a select few linked together by a stunning drive through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
“This event is a favorite for me certainly, but has also become highly anticipated for the folks who have marked their calendars to come visit the Gorge for this special weekend. They are inspired by our spaces, curious to see our process, excited to see what's new!” says Melanie Thompson, ceramicist.
On a studio tour, the senses are engaged: Smell the sawdust; see the materials, mastery, and craftsmanship; touch the unique and handmade objects; feel the creative energy of artists in their studios. Where else but on a tour of artists studios can you experience art this way? And where else but in the stunning Columbia River Gorge can you wind through forest, alongside orchards in bloom, across rivers, up into the hills, and back in time to find something delicious in town for lunch? Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour is unique.
“Gorge Artists Open Studios put the Gorge on the map as an Arts destination, and I have cherished being a part of the tour for many years,” notes Christine Knowles, pastel artist.
Visiting from out of town? Come for Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour and stay for the weekend! April is blossom time, when the local surrounding orchards are flocked with rows of pink and white. The mountains are still pristine and draped in snow, while the greening hills burst with wildflowers. Spring is the time of year when everything emerges once more, including people. Experience the natural beauty of the Gorge while enjoying fantastic local food, wineries, outdoor recreation, shopping, and a great selection of boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts.
We invite you to come experience the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour. To see what’s in store for this year’s experience, make sure to follow us on social media @gorgeartists or visit our website at www.gorgeartists.org.

The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum plans to make this event the Raptor Program’s primary annual fundraiser. The museum is the only place in the Columbia River Gorge where the community can meet and learn about live birds of prey. The program’s five raptors are non-releasable due to injuries sustained in the wild. They are educational ambassadors for their species and help the museum teach the public about falcons, hawks, owls, eagles, and all flora and fauna. In 2022, the program reached 17,000 guests, delivering over 600 programs on and off-site. The Raptor Program receives funds solely from donations, program fees, and grant support, all of which go directly to the care and maintenance of the raptors.
Complimentary pizza from Papa Murphy’s will be served while supplies last. Tickets are $20 for museum members and $25 for non-members. For tickets, visit www.gorgediscovery.org or call 541-296-8600 ext. 201.

Also available is a full bar of wonderful cocktails. Take your time here to discover The Dalles with all it has to offer. It's a unique place with 300 days of sunshine and an amazing history that contributed significantly to the establishment of the Western United States and Oregon.
Cheers!
Blending a wide variety of musical influences, along with the comfort on stage that comes from over two decades of performing, Yotes entertains audiences with a mix of songs from 1950’s country, 1980’s neo rockabilly, modern Americana, and many genres and eras in between. He mixes songs by Johnny Cash, The Stray Cats, The Blasters, and Murder By Death with his own compositions. Old favorites are interspersed with some of his favorite songs by friends and up-and-coming artists he’s met through the years.
In 2009, when his existing band chose to take some time off, Yotes began performing as a solo artist. Over the years Yotes has played in blues bands, rockabilly and psychobilly bands, and toured the US in a Johnny Cash tribute. As he continued to develop his one-man show those experiences shaped his approach producing and performing his act. Yotes’s solo performances have become a tribute to the artists and music that have influenced his music, a respectful nod to some of his favorite contemporaries, and a testbed for new music as it’s written.
