The sun-filled 900-square-foot room has been freshly painted, carpeted, and furnished with new UV-coated windows, kid-friendly furniture, and a large screen with live video of the Bald Eagle museum's Bald Eagle habitat. The space is also outfitted with an interactive mural of The Dalles’ sagebrush steppe landscape and its plant life, wildlife, and human inhabitants. A cozy reading nook invites visitors to read books about the area’s natural history. The first of many thematic iterations of the Explorer Room will focus on the museum’s Raptor Program, and the space will also be the first in the museum to feature bilingual English and Spanish signage. Throughout June, the project team will continue to add new elements and activities.
Lisa Commander, Director of Learning and Engagement, said, "We are so excited to unveil the new Explorer Room. Many people worked hard to create an inviting and engaging space for all ages, and our team is proud of the results. We cannot wait to add the finishing touches to the room and continue our long-term plans of revitalizing more exhibition spaces throughout the museum over the coming years."
The ribbon cutting at the Discovery Center & Museum is free and open to the public and will take place Saturday, June 3, from 2 pm to 3 pm. Visitors can experience the Explorer Room and its new additions with light refreshments provided by the Museum. Museum admission is free between 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm for the ceremony. All are welcome to attend the public event and explore the rest of the museum's exhibitions while visiting. For more information, visit www.gorgediscovery.org or call 541-296-8600 ext. 201.

Second Saturday
Please join us! Ride in antique cars, watch the antique planes take off and land, enjoy living history at its finest!
Join us the Second Saturday of each month when WAAAM gets the engines running. Action occurs between 10am and 2pm. Lunch is served between 11am and 1pm.
Second Saturdays throughout the winter will be held indoors. Weather permitting, cars and airplanes will be taken outside. Otherwise, there will be indoor events including demonstrations, special exhibits and hands on experiences for visitors.
Our antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, military jeeps and engines all get their day in the sun when museum volunteers get to show visitors that this is not just a bunch of old, dead stuff ... that life goes on for our artifacts!
What Our Volunteers Have to Say:
"A visit to WAAAM on a Second Saturday is bound to make you realize just how easy life is today. Take for instance, the process of starting a car. People don't even give it a thought these days, but in 1917, it may have taken a half an hour just to get the oil warm enough to crank a Model T's engine to life!
"Life was certainly slower in those days, and knowing about how life was back then helps us appreciate so much more what we have today.
"Please join us on a Second Saturday of the month ... or on any day ... and take a step back in time with us."
—Judy Newman, WAAAM Volunteer

Aaron Meyer and Band with the Gorge Sinfonietta
In addition to being an internationally-recognized superstar, electric rock violinist Aaron Meyer is one of the Gorge’s favorite musical artists. Meyer’s local performances are crowd-pleasing and diverse.
On Saturday, June 10, Aaron Meyer and his five-piece band return to Jackson Park, pairing with the Gorge Sinfonietta for a free concert of classics and rock, with Meyer’s special musical twist. A similar concert in 2019 drew nearly 800 people.
Aaron Meyer’s particular style is to take popular pieces of classical music and add the sound of electric solo violin and a driving rhythm section. He also does the opposite, taking classic rock and fusing it with the orchestra and his virtuoso playing.
On a typical program, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro will share the concert with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. For this concert, Sinfonietta conductor Mark Steighner is arranging some new classic rock for Meyer and the orchestra, including Toto’s Africa, Sting’s Every Breath You Take and Kansas’ Carry On My Wayward Son.
A student of the violin since the age of 5, Meyer debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra by age 11. He later soloed with the Oregon Symphony, The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra in Thailand and other symphony orchestras. Meyer spends a great deal of time working with students and advocating for music education worldwide.
Aaron Meyer and the Gorge Sinfonietta will be on June 10 at 7 PM in Hood River’s Jackson Park. The concert is free. Food trucks will be available and patrons are encouraged to enjoy a meal and the show.

A comedy night with Susan Rice means a tsunami of audience laughter. Get your tickets for this last comedy night of the season.
SUSAN RICE hasn't stopped making people laugh since she began her professional comedy career in 1983. Her career has taken her all over the country playing all the comedy clubs of the 1980s & '90s. Appearing on all the Network & Cable Comedy channels solidified Rice's credentials as a professional comedian.
The new century found her working more corporate events for companies such as Microsoft and Intell as well as The Red Hat Society. In 2015 Rice was voted by her peers and patrons of comedy The Willamette Weekly's "Portland's Funniest Person."
During the Pandemic in 2021, Rice produced the first St.Johns Comedy Festival to help the local Portland comics and her small neighborhood of St. Johns in North Portland. She hopes the festival will continue to bring people together with laughter.
At 70 Susan Rice appeals to both young and old. Her comedy reminds everyone that humor has no age limit, and laughter is the one human emotion that heals.
The show also features Art Krug and Seth Allen.
“Rice had the audience in the palm of her hand.” —The Oregonian
“She can go in and grab a crowd no matter what the circumstance.” —David Tribble,
