Wasco County Historical Society invites the public at 11:00 Saturday, July 8th, backyard of the Moody/Rorick House, 300 W. 13th St., The Dalles to hear from DAVID LONG, Shaniko resident, the upgrades currently underway in this city. Free admission, refreshments, lawn chairs welcome. A tour and history of the 1850 Moody/Rorick House may also be part of the day’s experience.
Shaniko, referred to as Cross Hollow in the 1880s, is located on U.S. Route 97, 20 miles SE of Maupin in Wasco County. Incorporated in 1901, its illustrious history included being the regional center of 20,000 square miles of sheep, cattle and wheat production, being Wasco County’s fifth largest city, shipping out over 2000 T. of wool in 1903 which earned its title of “Wool Capital of the World”. Its population in 1910 was thought to be 600; today’s cited as being in the 30s. Railroads played an important role in this history.
In 1959, the Oregon Centennial Commission, awarded Shaniko the title of “Oregon’s Ghost Town of the Year”. In 1979, its hotel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1982, Shaniko was designated as a Historic District.
The Shaniko Hotel, with plans to reopen this summer, is surrounded with reminders from its past. Visitors can see the 1900 water tower, 1901 school, the city hall and jail, the post post office, the wool barn, the wedding chapel, etc. Seasonally, we can also access the Ice Cream Shop, antique and gift stores, and perhaps more. As a reminder, be mindful of private residences.
Change of plans! Tonight’s River City Rhythm show has been postponed until this Saturday, July 8th at 7:00pm.

About The Event
Book artist and papermaker Ami Beaver will show you how to make your own paper and bind your own books with things you can find around your house. We will start by making our own paper from recycled materials like paper bags, egg cartons and paper scraps. Once we’ve made our own sheets of paper, we will bind them together into one-of-a-kind books. By the end of the week, campers will have several handmade books to take home with them.
Summer Art Camp runs Tuesday - Friday from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm. Supplies and instruction are included in your fee. Each camper will need to bring their own snacks, lunches and beverages. Wear comfortable clothes that are ok to get messy in and comfortable shoes for walking. We walk to City Park - a 2 block walk.
Each session is taught by artists with support from adult volunteers.
A note about scholarships & the registration system: TDAC offers scholarships on a sliding scale. When you check out, please indicate which level you are requesting.
