Peny Wallace, artist and art educator, long-time Mosier City Councilor, was motivated to compile a history of the Mosier Mounds as she observed new homes being built within the city limits. She did so with publishing her research in an attempt to both educate new residents as to these Mounds features and to further encourage protection. It is important to note that the Mosier Mounds are on the National Registry of Historic Places. In 2019, the Minor Mosier Mounds were deeded to Moser City to be held in perpetuity and protected.
Eric Gleason, The Dalles, has been an archaeologist since 1978 and has worked as such at North Bonneville, the Colville Reservation, Fort Vancouver, Northern California’s lava fields as well as locally. He and partner Jacqueline Chung own the Wing Hong Hai Company Store on First St. in The Dalles, have been actively pursuing the preservation of the Gitchell Building, serve on the city’s Historic Landmark Commission. Additionally, Eric has shared his archaeological interests and abilities by serving at one time or another on the Boards of the Wasco County Historical Society, the Original Court House, Fort Dalles Museum. One of his latest projects was reconstructing a map of the original Ft. Dalles grounds.
Archaeological research has shown evidence along the Columbia River of man’s existence 10 to 12,000 years ago. More recently, we have heard evidence of the First People’s existence in Oregon back 16 to eighteen thousand years ago. This August 5th presentation will offer but a “snapshot” into that long history!
We hope to see you at our final official 2023 summer program and hope that you will also on this day take a tour of our still-in-progress upgraded 1850 Moody/Rorick House Museum!
Hwy 14 is an ensemble of Gorge-Based musicians playing an eclectic mix of Rock, Blues, Honky Tonk, and an occasional ballad. We will get your toes tapping and put a spring in your step.

Kicking off with the “Neon Cruise”, Friday evening, downtown The Dalles. It’s an “open” cruise, just like back in the day, so just show up and start showing off (NO burnouts however). It starts around 7pm and extends well into the night. This is the favorite part of the weekend for many of the locals, and the sidewalks up and down 2nd and 3rd streets fill up with appreciative and enthusiastic spectators. Several downtown businesses will be having special events during the cruise. You can also pre-register for the show at Burgerville on 3rd St. between 4 and 7 pm.

Second Saturday
Please join us! Ride in antique cars, watch the antique planes take off and land, enjoy living history at its finest!
Join us the Second Saturday of each month when WAAAM gets the engines running. Action occurs between 10am and 2pm. Lunch is served between 11am and 1pm.
Second Saturdays throughout the winter will be held indoors. Weather permitting, cars and airplanes will be taken outside. Otherwise, there will be indoor events including demonstrations, special exhibits and hands on experiences for visitors.
Our antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, military jeeps and engines all get their day in the sun when museum volunteers get to show visitors that this is not just a bunch of old, dead stuff ... that life goes on for our artifacts!
What Our Volunteers Have to Say:
"A visit to WAAAM on a Second Saturday is bound to make you realize just how easy life is today. Take for instance, the process of starting a car. People don't even give it a thought these days, but in 1917, it may have taken a half an hour just to get the oil warm enough to crank a Model T's engine to life!
"Life was certainly slower in those days, and knowing about how life was back then helps us appreciate so much more what we have today.
"Please join us on a Second Saturday of the month ... or on any day ... and take a step back in time with us."
—Judy Newman, WAAAM Volunteer

2023 GUIDED KAYAK TOUR
NATURE - CULTURE - HISTORY
AUGUST 30, 2023
AUGUST 30 MEETS AT 9:30AM & INCLUDES LUNCH:
$90 FOR MUSEUM MEMBERS; $99 FOR NON-MEMBERS
Tickets at gorgediscovery.org/kayaktrips
Join us for three different guided kayaking adventures this July and August. We’ll explore a beautiful river in a protected cove of clear, glacier-melt water. The water is so clear that you can see the pebbles on the bottom of the river. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to see tons of wildlife; fish, eagles, osprey, herons, ducks, and otters call this inlet home. This 2-hour tour includes a paddle up the Wind River, a small beach to relax and swim in the chilly waters, and finishes with a float back out to the Columbia to enjoy a view of the mountainous Gorge. Guides and a museum educator will lead discussions on local birds and the cultural and ecological history of the area throughout the paddle. All kayaking gear and guides are included with your trip reservation.
Contact Lisa at lisa@gorgediscovery.org / 541.296.8600 ext. 202 or Mikey at mikey@gorgediscovery.org / 541.296.8600 ext. 215 with questions. There are some double kayaks available so please let us know if you would prefer a double kayak.
