Bull of the Woods fire lookout in Mt. Hood National Forest was scheduled for restoration when it was consumed by wildfire in 2021. Lookout towers will be featured in the first Regional History Forum program at the Original Wasco County Courthouse Saturday, Feb. 1. Barbara Telfer of The Dalles spent three summers staffing lookouts, and Rick McClure of Trout Lake was a Forest Service archaeologist, and in retirement, serves on an organization that preserves and protects remaining lookouts. “Fire Lookouts: Personal Reflections, History, and Preservation” is title of the program that begins at 1:30 p.m. in the courtroom of the 1859 Courthouse, located at 410 W. 2nd Place, The Dalles. Due to extremely cold temperatures in the forecast for next week, Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC) had made the decision to activate Emergency Shelter at The Gloria Center at 2505 W 7th St in The Dalles.
The Emergency Shelter will open next Monday, Feb.10 at 4PM and will be open 24 hours a day while it is activated. Emergency Shelter operations will be led by MCCAC staff and supported by the community volunteers. Support provided will include warm shelter, bedding and clothing items, food, water, hygiene and first aid items, and connections to community resources.

For more information about other services including supply bundles and transportation, visit the Severe Weather Resources safe of our website. in addition to Emergency Shelter at The Gloria Center, MCCAC also operates The Annex and The Hood River Warming Shelter.

Speaker Bio:
Buck Jones is an enrolled Cayuse member of one of the bands of the Confederated Tribes of The Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR). He is a multi-decade Columbia River Treaty Fisherman. Buck, who has been employed since 2004 for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC), started as a Fisheries Technician and now serves as Salmon Marketing Specialist. He works on product development, classes on Cold Water and Boat Safety, and provides quality-handling classes for approximately 700 tribal fishers. Buck is Co-Chair of the Food Sovereignty subcommittee for the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians and a board member of Gorge Grown Food Network, Mid-Columbia Economic Development District, Columbia Gorge Tourism Alliance, and One Community Health. Buck also serves on the Executive Committee of the Local Catch Network. Additionally, Buck is a nationally honored basketball player. From his youth into his 50s, Buck played in All-Indian Basketball Tournaments across the country. He was honored by the National Indian Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Hoopa All-Indian Tournament Hall of Fame, and Hall of Fame in the Pendleton Linebackers Club; winning many tournaments throughout Indian Country, including the All-Indian Nationals 4 times.

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association (CGOA) Jazz Collective, under the dynamic direction of Michael Paul, invites couples and music lovers to step back in time for a romantic evening of big band swing at their Valentine's Day Dance. The event will take place at The Ruins in Hood River on Valentine's Day, beginning at 7:00 PM.
This special performance promises to transform The Ruins into a sophisticated jazz venue, where the CGOA Jazz Collective will perform timeless classics from the greatest names in jazz and big band history. The evening's repertoire features an impressive selection of dance-worthy arrangements, including Stan Kenton's tender rendition of "My Funny Valentine," the infectious rhythm of Benny Goodman's "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön," and the passionate Latin flair of Arturo Sandoval's "Mambo Caliente."
